Name of Leuser is coined from the name of the second highest mountain in Sumatera Island, that is Leuser Mountain with 3.404 m height. The word of Leuser is from "leusoh", which in Gayo language means "covered with cloud" and some interpret it as "the last heaven for animals". Leuser Ecosystem Area was firstly introduced through Minister of Forestry No. 277.Kpts-II/1995, which was then confirmed with a Presidential Decree No. 33 Year 1998. This region is very important not only for its high variety but also for its function as the community life resources around the area and as natural forest area in northern Sumatera.
Leuser development program is intended to create a condition suitable for the implementation of Leuser Ecosystem area preservation and effective in the long-run. This area is a natural fortress situated between Laut Tawar lake in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam province (NAD) and Lake Toba in North Sumatera Province. There are eleven districts in Aceh province, namely: Southeast Aceh, South Aceh, West Aceh, Aceh Singkil, Central Aceh, while in North Sumatera Province is included Deli Serdang district, Langkat, Dairi and Tana Karo. The Total width is about 2.5 millions HA. This region is situated on geographic position of 2,250-4,950 North Latitude and 96,350-98,550 East Longitude with avarage rainfall is 2.544 m per annum and avarage daily temperature is 260 C at day time and 210 C ata night time.
On March 6, 1980, wild life preservation region of Leuser Mountain was assigned as National Park of Leuser Mountain by Minister of Agriculture. Leuser Ecosystem
Region consist of National Park of Leuser Mountain, Wildlife Reserve, Protected Forest, Natural Reserve and so on. This Leuser Ecosystem Region (KEL) needs to be preserved
considering the function:
- KEL Forest as water run off
- KEL Forest as natural lungs
- Agriculture and fisher support
- Non-timber forest product resources like resin, rattan and bird cage
- Natural tourism research object
- Habitat for Sumatera-typical biological species.
